Projekt FSM
Disinfection of faeces using microwaves
Solutions for effective and sustainable faecal sludge management (FSM) are in great demand worldwide. Every day, enormous amounts of fecal sludge are generated worldwide from on-site sewage disposal. 2.7 billion people around the world are served by on-site sanitation technologies and this number is expected to grow to 5 billion by 2030. FSM is a global challenge.
A new technological concept for the sterilization and dehydration of excreta (faeces and urine) has been developed by UNESCO-IHE in collaboration with Fricke and Mallah Microwave Technology GmbH and supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The technology uses microwave generators that are part of a specially designed reactor that can convert pathogenic human waste into clean water and inert dry material. The concept has been successfully tested in the Netherlands and Kenya and a demonstration plant is currently under construction.
