Thermal treatment of blackmass through rotary kiln microwave technology

Microwave technology has emerged as a promising thermal treatment method for removing organic matter and electrolytes from black mass, in contrast to conventional methods. This innovative approach utilizes the unique properties of microwaves to selectively heat materials from within. The advantages of microwave-assisted thermal treatment include reduced energy consumption compared to traditional heating methods and shorter processing times. Additionally, this technology has the potential to improve recovery rates of valuable metals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel, thereby enhancing the overall sustainability and economic viability of battery recycling processes. This project is a collaboration between IME and Fricke und Mallah Microwave Technology GmbH (FM), funded by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU). It involves using and adapting a rotary kiln developed by FuM to remove hazardous organic materials from blackmass while also improving lithium recovery rates through Early Stage Lithium Recovery (ESLR). By integrating microwave technology into battery recycling, we aim to contribute to the circular economy while consuming less energy and generating potentially less hazardous off-gases.
