In contrast to low-pressure plasma or high-pressure plasma, atmospheric pressure plasmas do not require a reaction chamber, which ensures that a pressure level different from atmospheric pressure or different gas atmospheres are maintained. Such plasmas are used at low current densities, for example to activate surfaces. In addition to the classic aggregate states of matter (solid, liquid and gaseous), plasma is often referred to as the “fourth” aggregate state, as it has a different character compared to the classic three states.
